Bowling Family and Bowling Sisters - Concert Recap - Clinton, Ark. 2018

At the end of July, the Bowling Family made a stop in Clinton, Arkansas. The Bowling Family and Bowling Sisters were part of a larger event with a few local groups and singers. It had been more than a year since I had seen this sweet family. Not only are they incredibly talented, but you know that when you come to a Bowling Family concert, you will have church. That night the Clinton High School auditorium was turned into a worship service.

The girls were featured at the beginning of the night and had a full set. These girls sound amazing together. Their sister harmony is on point. They sang several songs from theirThe Beginning project including, "Stronger," "He'll Do It Again," "At the Cross" and "Higher Ground." Their a cappella arrangement of "At the Cross" is incredible!

A local group called May Garden sang several familiar favorites like "When God Dips His Love" and "Chain Breaker" before the Bowlings took the stage.

The Bowling Family took the stage and started with an old favorite, "I'm on the Battlefield." It was really good to hear them sing a mix of older songs and some of their newest singles. Kelly was featured on "I Know Enough," but they also pulled up an older feature of Kelly's "A Miracle Today." This song has always been one of my favorites, so it was so good to hear it live!

Hope pulled double duty singing both with her parents and sisters. She was featured on "One Glorious Moment of Faith." It was great to hear her sing this one. After it being so long since I had seen them, it was evident how much Hope has grown as a singer!

Of course, Mike pulled out a few Hinson classics but I also loved hearing him on "I Was There," one of the highlights from their Moments Like These project. And he also sang "The Lighthouse" by request. He's probably my favorite person to hear sing this song.

They also sang one of their first big hits - "Your Cries Have Awoken the Master." I forgot how powerful that song is. It's an incredible reminder of how God always hears and He knows our voices. In those moments when we keep praying, He is hearing and working. I loved getting to hear it live again.

They ended the night with "I Never Shall Forget the Day." It was such a great night of gospel music and worship!

Fun Clip Friday - Bowling Sisters

These sisters made a splash with their debut album, The Beginning. The Bowling sisters, Hope, Katelanne and Gracie, are one of the best up and coming groups in the industry. With a rich family heritage, it's in their blood, but now these girls are making this music and calling their own.

Enjoy this clip of their take of "He'll Do It Again" for today's Fun Clip Friday!

Fun Clip Friday - Bowling Family Sisters - At the Cross

Sorry, I've been a bit inconsistent lately. However, I am bringing you a Fun Clip Friday post today. If you missed the National Quartet Convention Saturday night, you missed one of the highlights of the week.

The Bowling Family girls took the stage to sing a familiar hymn, "At the Cross." They sang the hymn arrangement again at Dollywood this week. You can check out the video below! These girls sound incredible together and have a bright future ahead!

Enjoy for today's Fun Clip Friday!

2016 National Quartet Convention - Saturday Night Recap

The 2016 National Quartet Convention is now complete. It was a great year. I am looking forward to seeing some of the performances again on demand and also catching what I missed Friday night. Here are my thoughts and highlights from the last night of NQC -

Commentary/ Highlights -

  • It was great to see so many of the younger generation in Southern Gospel highlighted tonight. I loved what the Erwins did by having so many of them join them on stage for "I Choose to Be a Christian." It was definitely a highlight of the night. The Bowling sisters singing "At the Cross" was another incredible moment. That sister harmony cannot be beat!
  • The hour of Tribute and Triumphant Quartets were the best of the night. These two groups had the longer sets of the night. Tribute again sang a lot from their new project again. I loved hearing all the new songs; their new project is a must buy! They ended their set with Triumphant joining them on "I Remember the Day." Triumphant then did a lot of favorites and requests. They closed with "He Is," great moment!
  • Gerald Wolfe had some chest congestion so he asked Mark Trammell to join Greater Vision on stage to help him sing. During their set, he said he felt like he could sing bass like J.D. So they did the Cathedrals arrangement of "Wonderful Grace of Jesus" with him singing bass.
  • I have to say I was expecting more during the finale. I was a little disappointed that several groups didn't come back to the stage and sing some of their hits.
  • Voices of Lee, though not officially on the program this year, made an appearance during Gordon Mote and Mark Trammell Quartet's sets. They also sang a great arrangement of "Good, Good Father."

Favorite Songs/ Performances of the Night -

  • "I Choose to Be a Christian" - The Erwins
  • "At the Cross" - Bowling Family (sisters)
  • "Only Jesus Can Heal This Hurting World" - Gordon Mote
  • "Holy Shore" - Perrys
  • "My Faith Still Holds" - Mark Trammell Quartet (with Voices of Lee)
  • "When the Prodigal Comes Home" - Tribute Quartet
  • "He Is" - Triumphant Quartet
  • "His Life for Mine" - The Talleys
  • "Wonderful Grace of Jesus" - Greater Vision with Mark Trammell

Family Ties - Silver Dollar City's Southern Gospel Picnic 2016 - Night One

Today was the first day of Silver Dollar City's Southern Gospel Picnic. If I ranked my favorite times of year, it would be Christmas and then the Gospel Picnic. I look forward to this all year long.

This afternoon, I drove up Hwy. 65 from Arkansas to Branson, Missouri. I got there just in time for the first evening concert of the festival in Echo Hollow. The groups kicking off the nightly concerts were Aaron and Amanda Crabb and the Bowling Family!

Aaron and Amanda Crabb took the stage tonight with "I'm on the Battlefield" to get the crowd going and singing along. They sang several old familiar favorites like "Going Home" and "He Looked Beyond My Faults." The duo has a new project releasing tomorrow (can't wait to hear it), so they sang a couple from it, "Lord Have Mercy" and "Restore Me," which is the title track that Amanda wrote.

The couple also let their daughter, Eva, sing "God Girl" with cousins Katelanne and Gracie. This was a song that Eva wrote!

I love watching Aaron and Amanda sing together on stage. It was the perfect way to kick off night one!

The Bowling Family opened with "Praise God He's Alive" from their most recent project. They sang several from this CD including "Mourning Into Dancing," "I Was There" and "One Glorious Moment."

They also featured their girls. Of course, Hope now sings full-time with them. If you haven't heard her recently, you should change that. She was featured on both "One Glorious Moment of Faith" and "How Can It Be." Katelanne and Gracie joined Hope for "If That Isn't Love." I love their sister harmonies. These girls have such a bright future ahead of them!

Mike sang a lot of old Hinson songs at the request of the audience. During "The Lighthouse" he heard someone in front of him singing with a deep bass voice. He pulled him on stage to sing the bass line of the song, and he did an awesome job! Mike asked him if he had a job, and he replied unfortunately yes.

After Aaron and Amanda finished, it was sweet to see them find a place on the front encouraging their family. It was good to see them bring back some of the Crabb songs and have Aaron join them. They sang "Don't You Wanna Go" and then ended with "Through the Fire," featuring Aaron. I think most of the audience was singing along. t was a great way to end the night.

Looking forward to being there the full day tomorrow!

Moments Like These - The Bowling Family - CD Review

This might be the week of CD reviews on the blog. I have several pending that need to be published, but let's start this week with the newest release by the Bowling Family.

Moments Like These is not only the group's first release with Daywind Records, but it's also the first one with daughter Hope taking a more prominent role with her parents.

With such strong releases like Shine and Safe... After the Storm, the bar is set high for what this group can do. But I think it's safe to say that Moments Like These is just as strong of a project.

The album starts with "Praise God He Is Alive" featuring Mike. The song is a great uptempo number.

One of my favorite songs on this project is "I Was There." The song talks about how God is there in every aspect of our lives and has been there throughout history. He's there for us and will always be there. This song definitely sounds country, and I can almost hear it as a song for country radio. The song is a perfect fit for Mike.

Kelly sings "Even When You're Asking Why." This song is definitely a highlight of the project. The song has an incredible message that will reach so many people because we've all asked the question why. Kelly communicates the lyrics beautifully. I can see this being one of her signature songs. Don't miss this song! She's also featured on the more upbeat "Mourning to Dancing," which I've already seen them stage live in concert!

Hope is featured on two songs on the project. "One Glorious Moment of Faith" is the first single from the CD, and it's climbed the charts. She absolutely knocks this one out of the park. I think this song is going to make a lot of people step back and realize what a great singer she is. I also love her version of "God Is Always Good." This is the same song Amber Nelon Thompson released earlier this year, but they have very different sounds and vocal styles. The message and lyrics of this song are so incredible; it's a must listen!

"I Believe He's Alive" has a little bit different style than the other songs on the album. The song features Mike on the verses and the trio has a choir singing with them on the chorus. Another song that's a little different style is "God Likes Working in the Midnight Hour." This song definitely has a country vibe. Mike shows that he can sing several different style songs all within one album. He's also featured on a recut of the Nelon's song "I've Got My Foot on the Rock." This is fun one to see live!

"Our First Hallelujah There" is a beautiful ballad featuring Kelly. This song really struck a chord with me after losing my grandfather just a few months ago. It's a beautiful song about the incredible worship we'll experience in Heaven. It's a great end to the project!

Moments Like These is definitely a project you need to check out. Mike, Kelly and Hope Bowling release one of the strongest projects of the year with this CD. It's right up there with their previous releases. Consider it a must buy this year!

Song List -

1. "Praise God He Is Alive"
2. "One Glorious Moment of Faith"
3. "I Was There"
4. "Mourning to Dancing"
5. "I Believe He's Alive"
6. "Even When You're Asking Why"
7. "I've Got My Foot on the Rock"
8. "God Is Always Good"
9. "God Likes Working in the Midnight Hour"
10. "Our First Hallelujah There"

Night of Worship - Bowling Family Concert Recap

Many times before stepping foot in a door of a concert you know what to expect by the group that is there. To me, the Bowling Family is one of those groups. You know you're going to have church. You know it's going to have those "worship" moments, so you're not just watching a concert. And that's exactly what happened last Thursday night in Cabot.

The Bowling Family (now consisting of Mike, Kelly and Hope Bowling) was at The Bridge Church in Cabot. The group just released a new CD a few weeks ago, and it was great hearing so many of the new songs live. I think that's one of the marks of a great project is how many songs a group stages from it. And while there were plenty of familiar favorites, they definitely showcased their new project well!

Here's what they sang -
Bowling Family - John Jeffrey (piano), Hope, Kelly and Mike Bowling
  • "Praise God He Is Alive" - They started with this new one that features Mike.
  • "I Know Enough" - Love this song that Kelly sings! It's the most recent #1 song.
  • "I'll Be Alright As Soon As I Touch Calvary"
  • "On the Battlefield" - This is one that really got the crowd going, standing up clapping!
  • "One Glorious Moment" - I've seen Hope sing this song live a couple of times now. She is one young talent to really keep your eye on! She nails this song each time, and she's just 15 years old! This song really showcases her voice well.
  • "Stand By the River" - The three Bowling sisters came up to sing this Dottie Rambo classic. Katelanne takes the verses with Gracie and Hope joining her on the chorus. They really sound incredible together!
  • "I Was There" - This is definitely one of my favorites from their new project! Mike does an incredible job on this song.
  • "Don't You Wanna Go" - Love the throwback to the Crabb Family days!
  • "Your Cries Have Awoken the Master" - I never get tired of this song! I'm glad they are still staging it! It was definitely a highlight of the concert! They went back and sang part of the song again!
  • "I've Got My Foot on the Rock" - Another great one from their new CD!
  • "Mourning to Dancing" - Kelly is featured on this song that's another new one! It's a great feature for her!
  • "That's What I Miss the Most"
  • "If That Isn't Love" - This was another song the three girls sang. Their harmonies are just incredible and at such a young age!
The Bowling Sisters - Hope, Gracie and Katelanne
The Bowling Family then did a set of just worship songs. I love that that's how they chose to end the night. It wasn't about them; it was about Him. They chose to close the service with just a time of all of us singing together and glorifying the Father.

Mike said at the very beginning of the concert that it wasn't about them. It wasn't going to be about them putting on a show, but lifting up the name of Jesus. I love that about this family. And I love the way the night ended. They could have had a big toe-tapping number that had the crowd on its feet, clapping along. They have plenty of songs to choose from for that. But that's not what they did. They chose to have worship with the congregation and an altar call that was all focused on Him.

Check out more photos from the concert on Facebook!

All About Family - Southern Gospel Picnic Silver Dollar City - Sept. 4

It's that part of the festival where things are winding down. There are only three more days left. And yes, I'm starting to get a little tired, but still sad to see it all come to an end for another year.

We started out the morning at the park, took a short break in the early afternoon and then came back. But in all, we managed to see five different groups again today. It was all about family groups today. There's truly nothing like family harmonies and seeing families sing and worship together.

Here are the highlights -

The Lesters

  • It was a nice surprise to see Ginger singing with them this weekend. Matt Felts has been sick with strep throat, so she was filling in.
  • "Blessed Beyond Measure"
  • "He Is" - This group was the first one I ever heard sing this song. Always a powerful moment of a concert.
  • Southern Gospel Picnic is normally the first time I hear a Christmas song. This year it was the Lesters who first brought Christmas cheer with "Angels We Have Heard on High" a cappella.
  • "Favorite Song of All"

The Goulds

  • I'm glad I got to see this group again. The Goulds consist of father Tim Gould and his two daughters, Kelsey and Christa.
  • "No Place to Hide"
  • "He's Alive" - Great song!
  • "He Promised Me" - Fun, uptempo song that reminds us that God won't leave us.

The Dunaways

  • If I could have picked out songs of a Dunaway set that the songs I know best from them, this would have been it! Great song selection!
  • "Church in the Kitchen" - This is one of those songs you can't help but like.
  • "Didn't I Walk on the Water" - Love this song!
  • "Don't Start Doubting Now" - My absolute favorite!!
  • "I Wanna Feel It Again"

Aaron and Amanda Crabb

  • This couple knows how to worship at a theme park. They really set the tone for the night where we could just have church.
  • "If I'm Guilty" - Love this song!
  • "Hold to God's Unchanging Hand"
  • "He Looked Beyond My Fault" - Aaron sang this on by himself. Great version of the Dottie Rambo classic.
  • "Please Come Down to Me"

The Bowling Family

  • It was good to hear so many of their new songs on their upcoming release! I cannot wait to hear the full album!! I'm not sure on these titles, but here are my best guesses -
    • "I Was There" - Kelly said this will probably become one of Mike's signature songs, and after hearing it I have to agree! Incredible song!!
    • "One Glorious Moment of Faith" - Hope does such an incredible job on this song. She just owns it.
    • "Praise God He's Alive"
  • "Don't You Wanna Go" - They pulled Aaron up to join them on this song! It really got the crowd going!
  • "Your Cries Have Awoken the Master" - Always a highlight to hear this song live!!
  • "I've Got My Mind Made Up" - This is an older song, so I'm not sure if it's included on the new project or not. They ended the night on this song with the audience on its feet clapping along.

Full of Gratitude - Bowling Family Concert Recap

About five years ago, I remember going to Hot Springs for a Bowling Family concert. A week later, the family was in a serious bus accident that caused them to be off the road for close to a year. Since the group returned to the road, they have had a changed perspective and an even greater desire to fulfill the calling on their lives. Seeing the group five years later around the anniversary of the accident and again in Hot Springs, the gratitude for what God did for them that day is as evident as ever before. I love how each time I see the family, they still tell of how God answered prayers and spared their lives so they can keep on singing for His glory.

It was a great night of gratitude, worship and praise. Here's a lineup of what they sang -
Bowling Family - Hope, Kelly and Mike Bowling
  • "I'll Be Alright As Soon As I Touch Calvary"
  • "On the Battlefield"
  • "I Know Enough" - Love hearing Kelly sing this song. This is becoming one of my favorite Bowling Family songs. The message of this song is great!
  • "That's What I Miss the Most" - Mike does such a great job on this song.
  • "One Glorious Moment of Faith" - This is the group's newest single that will be on their upcoming release. Hope is featured on this song, and wow! This song will be a defining moment in her career as a singer. It's absolutely incredible!
  • "Stand By the River" - The Bowling daughters sang this one. These girls together sound so great; they have a great blend.
  • "Your Cries Have Awoken the Master" - This song never gets old! It wouldn't be a Bowling Family concert without this song.
  • "The Lighthouse" - Mike is one of my favorite people to hear sing this song. I love hearing him sing the Hinson classics!
  • "Don't You Wanna Go" - It's always great to hear this Crabb Family song and twice is a treat! People had such a great response to this song that they repeated it!
  • "I Could Still Go Free"
  • "I'm Glad I'm Saved"
  • "I Still Glory in the Cross" - Always such a great moment and a great song!
  • "I Never Shall Forget the Day"
During the concert Kelly shared about the accident as they showed news footage from the scene. "It didn't take God long at all to show up and show out even in the worst situation we've ever been through," Kelly said. "People started loving on us, and God used His people to support us." She shared that there was no reason they should be standing there that night singing. She recalled watching the news the night of the accident from the hospital bed hearing an officer say that he expected several fatalities. "When God has shown mercy and kept His hand on you, I never want to forget," she said. I love how they never tire of sharing how God spared them that day.

They had a time of invitation and a sweet time of worship to end the concert. It was an incredible night full of gratitude of what God has done. Even though most of us haven't experienced a traumatic accident like the Bowlings, we can all relate to situations in our life where God extended His mercy to us. It was a great reminder of how we should show our gratitude daily by the way we live our lives and telling others about the goodness of God.

Bowling in the New Year - Concert Recap

The first weekend of 2015 was full of gospel concerts, and I'm not complaining one bit! The first one of January was with the Bowling Family. This was my first time seeing the group since Troy Peach left, and they added a live band. They added a native Arkansan on drums, I love how every time you see them, you know you are going to have church and Friday night was no exception.

Here's a lineup of what they sang –
Bowling Family - Kelly, Hope and Mike

  • “I’m on the Battlefield”
  • “I Know Enough” – This was #1 for the group for the month of December. Definitely a favorite from their most recent album!
  • “I’ll Be Alright as Soon as I Touch Calvary”
  • “Unclouded Day”
  • “How Blessed” – I’m glad they are staging this song again, always been a fan of it. Sorry, Mike, but I have to mention this and I know it's already been mentioned on Facebook. The church had a nativity scene at the front on a table right in front of the stage. Of course, during one of the most serious songs, Mike knocked over the manger scene. Kelly joked later that they had the same manger scene at home, so they could replace it if Mike broke it.
  • “Everything’s Gonna Turn Out Right” – Hope is featured on this song. She has really become more comfortable in her role on stage. She’s got an incredible gift in her voice that’s only going to continue to get better!
  • “Stand By the River” – All the Bowling girls, Hope, Katelanne and Gracie, were featured on
Bowling daughters - Hope, Katelanne and Gracie
this one. Katelanne sang lead. I am so impressed with the harmonies and what these girls can do at their ages. They also sang a verse and chorus of “It Is Well” Sisters style that they had just learned. It was great!!!
  • “The Lighthouse” – Mike Bowling is probably my favorite person to hear sing this song.
  • “He Can” – The entire church was at its feet for this song clapping along!
  • “I Still Glory in the Cross” – Another one from their Shine project that I was glad to hear live! Such a powerful song and a highlight of the night!
  • “Call Me Gone” – After intermission, they asked for a few requests. One of the first ones called out was this song. The crowd loved hearing Mike sing the old Hinson songs.
  • Kelly gave their testimony of the bus wreck. She talked about the incredible power of God with how He’s more than able to take care of whatever we are facing. She said, “Whatever you are fighting or facing tonight, hold your head up high and know that if you are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, every promise in the Word of God is written for you. God can make a way.” She prayed that this would be the year for those unanswered prayers we have all been waiting on to be answered.
  • “Your Cries Have Awoken the Master” – It wouldn’t be a Bowling Family concert without hearing this song. Kelly’s testimony and words were the perfect set up for the song.
  • “I Surrender All”/ “He Is Lord”/ “Because He Lives” – It was a true altar call, people kneeling, hands raised in worship and the power of God moving over people. Absolutely INCREDIBLE end to the service!!!

The night was a great way to usher in 2015!

Top Songs of 2014

It's that time of year when we have several countdowns of the year going. Today's post is all about the top songs of the year. My song countdown is a little different from others. I take all the #1 songs on the chart from this year and make my list of top 5. As I started making my list this year, I realized that there were a few songs I wanted to include that surprisingly did not make it to #1 ("Say Amen" and "Your Walk Talks"). So maybe next year, I'll do it a bit differently.

Several groups had two #1 songs this year including Karen Peck and New River, Greater Vision, Kingdom Heirs and the Browders. In addition to being #1, many of these songs were also award winners at the Singing News Fan Awards, Absolutely Gospel Awards and even the Dove Awards.

So for 2014, here's my top 5 -

5. "I Know Enough" (Bowling Family) written by Marcia Henry and Belinda Smith - This song by the Bowling Family features Kelly Bowling. I love this song all about trust. We may not understand why God works the way He does, but we know enough to know that He has taken care of us before and will again.

4. "Long Live the King" (Old Paths) written by Chris Binion and Dianne Wilkinson - This is a great power ballad by the quartet. He lives forever; He conquered death, and together with Him we will live forever praising His name. This song has some of the most powerful lyrics and with the powerful delivery, song arrangement and orchestration, it's a winning combination!

3. "For All He's Done" (Greater Vision) written by Chris Allman - I realize that I didn't pick the more awarded or maybe more popular Greater Vision song. "For All He's Done" makes my list though. It's an incredible reminder that no matter what, we can praise Him for all He's done in our lives. It's a great reminder to not take for granted all that He has done. Because of that, we should continually praise Him and strive to live for Him.

2. "Up Above" (Talleys) written by Rebecca Peck - Sometimes you just don't understand how God is working. You can't see what He sees. We often don't know why things work out they way they do, but up above it will all make sense. This song is so applicable to all of us at times in our lives. We have to trust that up above we'll understand and know that He's leading us every step of the way. The message is simple, but so powerful and one that needs to be reinforced so many times.

1. "Finish Well" (Karen Peck and New River) written by Karen Peck Gooch, Kenna Turner West and Michael Farris - Again, I'm going against the grain and not picking the more awarded song by this group for the year. So many times I tend to be reminiscent and dwell on the past, but a verse that Karen often uses to set up the song is Ecc. 7:10, which says it's not wise to say we have seen our better days. What a more fitting song than this to encourage the church to keep running the race? Don't think that the best lies behind. Our best days are ahead if we keep working and living for God, doing our part to advance His Kingdom for the glory of His name.  No matter where we are in life, may we all finish well.

What do you think were the tops songs this year?

  • The Bowling Family has added two new band members. Blake Bowling (Mike's nephew) and Logan Rodgers (who is from Arkansas) both 21 will be joining the group. Read more here.
  • The new Booth Brothers and the new Jim Brady Trio will both debut at Legacy Five's New Year's Celebration in Nashville.
  • Daywind Publishing has welcomed Gerald Crabb to its talented roster of writers. Gerald had been with Daywind previously for 10 years.
  • The Diamond Awards were this week. I couldn't find a full list of winners, but Karen Peck and New River won for album and song of the year with Revival. Also, 11th Hour picked up its first award for Sunrise Artist of the Year. Once I have a full list of winners, I will post a link!

NQC Day 4 Highlights - National Quartet Convention Recap

I actually got to watch most of the webcast in its entirety tonight. Now, I'm not going to promise that I was glued to the screen the entire night to catch every detail, but I caught almost everything! :)

Probably the moment of the night happened early on during the Booth Brothers set. They sang several and then called Paul Lancaster (who will replace Jim Brady) and the Collingsworth Family up to join them. They sang "Jesus Saves" which featured Paul. It was absolutely incredible!! I love how the Booth Brothers and Jim Brady have handled this transition. It was great to see them all so supportive of each other. Paul did an amazing job on the song, and it was great to hear them backed up by the Collingsworth Family!

A lot happened toward the beginning tonight with Karen Peck and New River and the Bowling Family being two of the first groups. KPNR had a solid set as always. I'm disappointed to see the Bowling Family with only one set this week. They had a great set and featured the Bowling girls on one song. These girls have great harmonies now, so I can't wait to hear them in a few years! Hope continues to amaze me. I love that they have brought "Jesus Pilots My Ship" back!

The Collingsworth Family also brought up additional family members tonight. They had all their children's spouses join them on stage for "We Will Serve the Lord." Another great moment!

It was a night for the younger generation of singers to stand out! Karlye Hopper was featured on a verse of "I'll Worship Only at the Feet of Jesus." The Taylors had a great night that featured not only songs from their latest project but also their brother-in-law Aaron Perkins on a few songs. It was cute to see Leslie and Aaron bring up Isaiah to the stage.

Brian Free and Assurance also brought up Lauren Talley Alvey to sing "Where There's a Will" with them live. She was a guest vocalist on their album, so it was neat to see them sing it live together!

Lauren and Gerald Wolfe co-hosted the evening and did a fantastic job!

Here are the highlights from the night (in no particular order) -

  • "Jesus Saves" - Booth Brothers (with Paul Lancaster) and Collingsworth Family

Mixing the Old and the New - Day 8 Recap of Silver Dollar City's Southern Gospel Picnic

Friday was a mixture of the old and the new at Silver Dollar City. The groups are park were very diverse from a traditional male quartet who had been around for 80 plus yeas to three red-headed young girls just getting their starts to family groups who are making a name for themselves.

My day started at Red Gold Hall with Red Roots. This was my first time seeing these girls sing live. I was extremely impressed with the level of talent these girls have. I’d heard them sing before, but I never realized what talent they have as musicians. I think I counted eight different instruments on stage, and they played them all!!

I was actually surprised that I was more familiar with some of their songs than I thought I would be. They started with “Christian Country Girl,” which I had heard a lot on radio. I also had heard “Seven Days,” but my favorite of what I heard them sing was “Grow.”

I was impressed not only by these girls’ musical abilities but also by what they said in between songs. You can tell these girls are passionate about sharing Christ through music and living for Him. It was also fun to see a lot of young girls in the audience who you can tell are big fans. These girls are definitely making impressions on young fans.

From there, I went to see the Sneed Family at the Riverfront Playhouse. I got the chance to interview them last year, but this was my first time seeing them live. They had a full live band with keys, drums and two guitars. They started the set with “Sail on Over to the Other Side.” Then Jeff, the patriarch of the family, was featured on “I’ve Got More to Go to Heaven For.”

They sang other familiar songs like “If You’ll Move Over, I’ll Help You Carry Your Load” and “I Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now.” However, the highlight of the set was Amanda singing “Hallelujah Square.” She, Caleb and Seth repeated the chorus a cappella. Amazing job!!! They ended the show with “He Is Leading the Way.”

My afternoon was spent with Karen Peck and New River catching a couple of the group’s shows. Kari, Karen’s daughter, joined them on stage singing for the last show. They repeated a few songs, but pretty much had completely different sets each time. They repeated “Revival” and of course “Four Days Late,” but I didn’t mind one bit. That song never gets old. I don’t care how many times I hear it, it still speaks to me and you can see how it still ministers to others. During the second show, Karen sang “Amazing Grace” a cappella and then went into “Four Days Late!” Absolutely beautiful!!

It was good to hear other songs from their most recent project like “Everybody’s Going Through Something,” “Finish Well” and “You Did It Anyway.” “Finish Well” is becoming one of their most powerful and most requested songs. Jeff gave a heartfelt testimony during the last show of how his pastor died suddenly just days before they went into the studio to record that song. They left straight from the funeral to the recording studio. He said it was the last thing on his mind, but as soon as Karen started singing that song the Spirit was in the room and he had the peace that passes all understanding.

Karen made sure to close each show with prayer, praying for those who were hurting and those who might not know Christ. I absolutely love the heart of this group!!

The night concert featured Aaron and Amanda Crabb, the Blackwood Brothers and the Bowling Family. This was my first time seeing Aaron and Amanda live. It is so sweet seeing this couple minister together as a duo. They sang several classics like “Going Home,” “He Looked Beyond My Fault” and “Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand.” I also loved that they chose to sing a few from their latest project “If I’m Guilty” and “Take Him to the Place.” Amanda talked about the last one being her testimony song and how she had written it from John 11 when Jesus said to take Him to the place where Lazarus lay. Incredible song!!

The Blackwood Brothers took the stage next. They started with “Feelin’ Mighty Fine” and then went into “Jesus Is Coming Soon.” A highlight of their set was Butch Owens featured on “I’ve Got to Walk That Lonesome Road.” Michael Helwig also sang “It Is No Secret,” another great moment!

They had the entire audience on its feet standing and clapping along with “I Wanna Be More Like Jesus.” They repeated the chorus a few times. Normally groups would end with a song like that, but they chose to end on a hymn “Blessed Assurance.”

The Bowling Family closed the night. They started with “I’ll Be Alright As Soon as I Touch Calvary.” Then they sang two songs from Safe After the Storm, “Come Along Let’s Fly” and “I Know Enough.”

They brought back an older song that Hope sang when she was younger, “Jesus Pilots My Ship.” If you thought she was incredible on this song before, you should hear her sing it now!! She, Troy and Mike repeated the chorus a cappella! It was amazing!! They also brought up their younger daughters to sing “My Country Tis Of Thee” in honor of the veterans. Their harmonies at such a young age are incredible.

Kelly was featured on the Crabb Family song “Don’t You Wanna Go.” Aaron was in the sound booth and ran down to join them on stage! It’s always good to see a mini Crabb reunion!! Mike made the comment after the song that he thought he would be cooked after being under those hot lights, but Kelly said it was hard to cook a Crabb! Haha!

Kelly gave the testimony of the bus accident to set up “Your Cries Have Awoken the Master.” This is always such a powerful song and a highlight of the night! However, I think my favorite song from last night was “I Still Glory in the Cross!” After that song, they ended on the barnburner “I Never Shall Forget the Day” bringing up Duane Garren to sing the last part with them!

Seeing With Fresh Eyes - Bowling Family Concert Recap

I mentioned Monday that the past few weeks has been great for concerts in Arkansas. Saturday I went to go see the Whisnants, which check out my guest blog post on Yankee Gospel Girl's blog for that recap!

Sunday I had the chance to see the Bowling Family in Little Rock at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. I'm starting to get to know more about the churches in Central Arkansas that have concerts regularly in the area, and this was one I had not heard of before. When I got there, I found out that this was the first group the church had brought in and not only that but most of the people there knew nothing of the Bowling Family before Sunday.

The pastor talked about the group briefly at the start of the service. He mentioned watching them on YouTube the week before and how he wasn't going to preach because from watching clips he knew the gospel would be presented.

The Bowling Family - Troy Peach, Hope, Kelly and Mike Bowling
and John Jeffrey
The church took its regular Sunday offering as John Jeffrey played "Shout to the Lord." The music pastor came up and introduced the Bowling Family. Mike could feel spirit as the song had played before and asked John to keep playing the song as he led the congregation in singing it. I loved how they completely deviated from what was planned to follow what he felt led to do and lead in worship.

Then, they started singing and let the audience see what they had been missing out on! Mike sang "I'll Be Alright As Soon As I Touch Calvary." Then, they sang two songs from their latest project Safe After the Storm, "Come Along Let's Fly" and "I Know Enough." Loved hearing Kelly sing the second one!! They then sang "How Blessed." It was good to hear them stage this song! I'm not sure if they do it regularly or not anymore, but I've always been a fan of that one!

They asked the congregation how many were seeing them for the first time. Only a handful of us did not have our hands raised. They introduced Troy and Hope, and then Hope was featured on "Everything's Gonna Turn Out Right." She is growing so much as a vocalist and becoming more comfortable in her role!

Hope, Katelanne and Gracie Bowling
Troy then introduced Mike and Kelly. When he mentioned that Kelly was the prettiest part of the Crabb Family, some light bulbs went off and some recognized that name at least. They then sang "Don't You Wanna Go."

Mike and Kelly brought their two youngest girls up, Katelanne and Gracie. The three girls sang together, "Accentuate the Positive" and "Healer." Their girls have great harmony together already!

Kelly then gave their testimony. I normally see the Bowling Family three to four times a year, depending on when they are nearby. By now I've heard their testimony several times, and it's miraculous and amazing every time, but there was something about sitting among people who were hearing it for the first time. Sometimes we can let things lose that sense of amazement because we've heard it before. It's like a familiar song or a scripture passage can leap out at us when we listen to or read it with fresh eyes. That's the way I felt Sunday.

They showed clips of the bus accident as Kelly shared what happened on July 1, 2010. She said that the sheriff later said in an interview that he expected several fatalities. She also went into details on how hard the recovery process was for them. It was seven months of no singing, no traveling, physical therapy, headaches for Mike, and their lives were just put on hold.

She said that through all of it she learned that "God is good whether the sun is shining or whether the rain is falling." All those songs that she had been singing since she was a teenager came back full circle. She learned how much you could rely on them and their messages. She said it was good to know that even on the days when the doctors weren't sure what to say that they could stand on the promises of God. She could trust that God heard their cries. They then sang "Your Cries Have Awoken the Master." It was such a powerful moment!

Mike said that they had a request for "By the Time," so they sang it next. Then they sang "I Still Glory in the Cross" before the invitation. They sang "I Surrender All" as an invitation which featured Troy and then "What a Day That Will Be" to close.

The pastor came back up and asked them to sing one more, so it actually ended with "Victory in Jesus." It was an incredible service. It was great to see the Bowling Family with so many new people, and I'm sure new fans now. It really helped me see the family with fresh eyes. I know that even though it might have been the first gospel concert the church had, I'm confident because of the service that they had it won't be the last!

Side note - Thanks to Troy Peach and people from the church for helping me after my car wouldn't start after the concert. Troy helped find jumper cables from church members to boost me off! Thanks again!!

Kelly and Hope Bowling - Spotlight on Mothers and Daughters

Today the spotlight on mothers and daughters continues with ...

Kelly and Hope Bowling

From Hope -

Question: When have you been most proud of your mother?
Hope: When I saw how brave she was through our bus wreck.

Q: What TV mom does your mother most resemble?
Hope: The Partridge Family mom, because she was in to music

Q: What's one phrase that your mother always said to you as a child?
Hope: Treat others the way you want to be treated

Q: What five words best describe your mother?
Hope: Unselfish, caring, reserved, beautiful, honest

Q: What’s the most important lesson your mother has taught you on stage or off?
Hope: To be considerate of others, and make other people a priority over yourself.

From Kelly -

Question: When have you been most proud of Hope?
Kelly: I'm proud of Hope so often. I can't help but be proud when she sings, but as I watch her grow up, it's so rewarding when I see her love people, make a right decision. When I see her character, that's makes me so proud, she really is a good girl.

Q: If she hadn't chosen singing, what career would you have encouraged Hope to choose?
Kelly: Well, she's only 14, so she still may choose another path, but she's doing pretty great at this singing thing. I just want her to do something that she's passionate about and loves to do.

Q: Does she help you pick out stage clothes or do you help her?
Kelly: We mostly pick out our own clothes, but we do give each other very honest opinions, one thing about mother and daughter, we don't care to say, "That's not your best look."

Q: What’s one quality that Hope has that you wish you exhibited more?
Kelly: Hope is so creative, she really is a unique thinker. She's an avid reader, and in some ways is wise well beyond her years. She has a lot of what I call "people" sense. I didn't think I was that way at her age. That was more than one, sorry proud mom moment.

Q: What’s one thing you learned from your mother that you wanted to be sure and pass on to your daughter?
Kelly: My mother is the hardest working person I know. She is a mover and a shaker. I pray some of that is handed down to my girls.

Thanks Kelly and Hope for participating! Keep checking back to see more interviews later this week!

Somebody's Believing - When Lyrics Speak

There are certain prayers I pray each time with expectancy. When I'm traveling and pray for safety I don't envision having major issues or trouble. I expect God to answer. I flew to Florida for vacation last weekend. Each time the wheels of the plane lifted I said a prayer asking God to get me to my destination safely. And He did. And I expected Him to. I prayed believing that He would answer. But how many times do I pray without expectancy without really believing that He will answer?

It made me think about the song "Somebody's Believing" by the Bowling Family. This song was written with Mike in mind. When he was diagnosed with vocal polyps last year and thought that singing might not be an option, someone prayed and believed and He was healed.

The first verse talks about the hard times we have all had to endure. Each one of us can relate to valleys that God has brought us through. And I'm sure in every case there has been someone praying for us, whether we knew it or not. The second verse thanks those who had been faithful in prayer, approaching the throne of God on our behalf. Those who didn't just pray but believed and expected the miracle.

How many times when I pray do I dare to take God at His Word? When I fly in man-made aircraft flown by a mere human, I willing to accept that God will get me some safely from one place to another. But why do I find it difficult to trust that an Almighty God can reach down and give someone the touch they need? We serve a God who with Him nothing is impossible.

The challenge is truly believing. Take God at His Word. Expect the miracle. In Christ, all things are possible. Dare to take God at His Word. Trust in the power of The Lord.

Thank God there have been people in my life with stronger faith who have prayed and believed in miracles for me. By faith, they saw what could be. I'm thankful for those faithful who prayed for me. I pray now that I can know be one of those for someone else. I pray that my faith will strengthen, and I will pray expecting and believing that God will move.

The challenge for me lately has been not to settle for a simple prayer life. I need to pray the "big prayers" daring to take God at His Word. May I be the somebody who is praying and believing in that miracle.

Fun Clip Friday - Kelly Bowling in Virtuous

Kelly Bowling has become the latest Southern Gospel artist to star in a movie. She will be in the movie Virtuous as Nurse Kathy. IMDB.com describes the movie as "a modern day version of Proverbs 31. It's the story of a Hollywood starlet, a soldier on the battlefield, the successful businesswoman, and the housekeeping and cooking skills of dear old Mom."

So for today's Fun Clip Friday, check out a sneak peek of the movie Virtuous.
