In Case You Missed It - News and Tidbits - June 13

Here are some news and tidbit items from this week in gospel music -

• McCray Dove and Tony Peace announced this week that they will be forming the New Dove Brothers. Watch this video announcement. More details will be announced later.
• Phillip Hughes resigned from the Harvesters and has joined the Anchormen as lead. He was with the Anchormen previously for four years starting in 1997.
• The Good News! He's Alive! Tour which features The Talleys and Tribute Quartet launches June 27 in Houston, Texas. For more dates on the tour, check out the Harper Agency's website.
• Tammy Jones Robinette signed a new agreement with Rural Rhythm Records.

Burman Porter Leaves the Dove Brothers Band

Burman Porter announced on his Facebook page that he has resigned from the Dove Brothers Band due to health reasons. He has been the bass singer for the group since 2011 and also was in that position from 1997 - 2004. Here's the statement he issued:

Today, with mixed emotions, I tendered my resignation to The Dove Brothers Band.

Many of you know that this past weekend during the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion I suffered chest pains that lead me to make a trip to the local emergency room on the night that I was to perform with the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion Quartet. After several rounds of blood tests, x-rays, and an EKG I was released with instructions to not be far from home and to see my family physician as quickly as possible.

I cannot thank my friends at the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion enough for their kindness and understanding as I missed the evening performance that I had been looking forward to for a year. During my visit to the hospital I received numerous calls, text messages, and Facebook messages offering prayers and encouragement. I am very thankful that I have true friends who think enough of me to reach out like that.

Following the evening performances The Dove Brothers left Greenville, SC for an extended tour that I did not feel comfortable taking considering the warning from the ER doctors, so I remained in Greenville, 3 blocks from the hospital for the remainder of the weekend. We returned home Sunday morning and Robin went with me to see my doctor today. We were told that the source of my chest pain is stress…and that I should do anything within my ability to reduce my stress level in order to stop the pains and avoid future complications.

Following my doctor visit, and after talking with Robin, we informed McCray that we feel it best that I not return to the road with the group. McCray says he has found my replacement, so I'm sure you can look for his announcement sometime soon…but I wanted you to hear it from me first.

I'm sure Burman and the Dove Brothers covet your prayers during this transition time.

Memphis Quartet Show

Apparently those of us who were not at the Memphis Quartet Show missed a great event! Several videos have been circulating on YouTube and SocialCam from the event that shows us just how much we missed out on! Here are a few of the clips and highlights that people have shared from the event.

Tuesday Tidbits

Here are several little noteworthy things going on in Southern Gospel:

• The second round of voting for the Singing News Fan Awards is now open! You must be a subscriber to vote. Vote here!
• The Dove Awards air on the Gospel Music Channel tonight at 7 p.m. (Central time). Jason Crabb and the Isaacs performed last Thursday night, so I expect they will be on the televised portion. Karen Peck Gooch also sang with other female artists in a tribute to Whitney Houston.
• Also, Rob Patz and Rhonda Frye were in Atlanta last week for the awards. Listen to them talk about their experiences!
• Congratulations to Mark Trammell and Jim Brady who were both named to the National Quartet Convention Board last week!
• If you haven't seen Legacy Five's concept video of "Ask Me Why," check it out!
• Leslie Taylor has announced her departure from the Taylors as the soprano. Wish her the best as she seeks new opportunities and ministries.
• EDIT: The Ball Brothers announced this morning that Joshua Ball is retiring from the group. Read their statement on their Facebook page. (Probably the best group-member-leaving announcement I've seen!)
