I Am Whatever You Need - When Lyrics Speak

Each week during college, a group of friends gathered in the campus chapel to have a time of worship. Different activities of worship each week, some weeks we sang, others it was a time of prayer and sometimes just encouraging each other in the faith. Looking back those are some of my favorite memories in college, ones where I not only connected and formed lasting friendships with people but I also grew closer to the Lord.

One week's activity has always stuck out in my mind. We came into the chapel and different names and words to describe God were taped to the pews. We found the one that we most related with at the time and each sat on our different pews offering up praise for what God had been to us. It was so interesting to see how God had been all these different things to us just recently. One girl had dealt with a loss and chose the pew labeled "Comforter." While someone else had just seen God restore a loved one and was in the "Healer" pew. I had just seen God provide for me in something so insignificant but to me was a big deal at the time, so I went straight to the "Provider" pew. We all were serving and worshiping the same God, but He had been very different things to each of us.

I love the song by the Hoppers that is "I Am Whatever You Need." The song goes through the different names of God, and tells us that He is exactly what we need. If we simply need a reminder that He is always with us, He is Emmanuel, "God With Us."

The song says that it doesn't matter what you are facing, God has the answer. He has promised that He will always be there, and He will meet all our needs. The chorus goes through Biblical examples of how God provided for different people. He is whatever we need. 

The song reminds us that He is steadfast and faithful in our lives. He will be there no matter what problems or situations come up. Sometimes we just need those reminders that He is whatever we need.

God has many different names, sometimes we need Him as Redeemer and other times we simply need Him as Father. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, but the attribute of God that we most relate to can change day to day. That day I needed a provider, and He was what I needed. Some days I do need God the Healer to show his power, and each day He is exactly what I need. I'm so thankful to serve a God whose steadfast power, love and faithfulness is what I need every day.
