2018 Southern Gospel Picnic - Silver Dollar City - Day 4

This morning started off with hearing Dr. Dennis Swanberg speak in the Opera House. I also got to see The Old Paths and the Hoppers today. Here are a few highlights from the day -

The Old Paths

It's hard to narrow this list down to just a few. These guys are sounding better than ever. They did a mix of songs from their newest project with a few familiar favorites. Steve even was featured on a song that he did with Gold City, "Preach the Word." Daniel brought out his sax for a few songs as well. It was great to see the audience so responsive and into the sets after the quartet's return to Silver Dollar City after their time off the road.

  • "God's Great"
  • "Love Them to Jesus"
  • "Tangled in the Middle"
  • "Broken People Like Me"
  • "I Wanna Get Closer"
  • "Preach the Word"
  • "I Bowed on my Knees and Cried Holy"

The Hoppers

The Hoppers took the stage with just Dean, Kim, Mike and Karlye for the first few songs. Dean introduced his parents and then Connie and then later Claude came out to join them.

  • "Life Is Good"
  • "Yahweh"
  • "I Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now" - Love hear them singing songs from the first families of gospel music.
  • "I've Come Too Far to Look Back" - Always a treat to hear Connie sing this song!
  • "Jerusalem"
  • "Something's Happening" - They knock this song out of the park every time.
  • "He Is Mine, and I Am His" - This has become one of my favorite songs. I love their version of this song.
  • "My Ransom" - It's good to hear Karlye step up and sing one by herself. She's got a great voice.
  • "Shoutin' Time" - This is always a fun one to hear at Echo Hollow, and of course, they repeated the chorus several times. The entire audience was up clapping at the end!

In Case You Missed It - August 19 - News and Tidbits

Here are some news items from this week in Southern Gospel -

  • The Kingsmen Quartet announced Chris Bryant as the group's new lead vocalist. As a Wiggins, Mississippi native, Chris has served in music ministry for several years in various capacities while operating his own business. Most recently, he has served as lead vocalist for the Mississippi-based quartet, The Bibletones. His first official date with the group was August 9.
  • Prayers go out to the family of Polly Lewis Copsey. Polly sang with the first family of bluegrass gospel music, The Lewis Family. She is also the mother of Sheri Easter. She battled with Parkinson's disease for 16 years.
  • The Old Paths announced that they will start a full-time touring schedule in 2019. The group returned to the road after a year and a half break in June 2017.

The Old Paths Return

This is news I think a lot gospel fans have been wanting to hear! The Old Paths are coming back on the road for select dates. Tim Rackley, Doug Roark and Daniel Ashmore are teaming up with Steve Ladd to tour again as The Old Paths.

The group announced they were coming off the road in May 2015 and sang their final concert in December 2015. Here's the full release from Crossroads -

Arden, NC. (January 17, 2017) - Crossroads Entertainment and Marketing is excited to announce the return of The Old Paths. After the success of their previous recordings with Sonlite Records and their incredible standing in the industry, we are looking forward with anticipation of continuing with them in this future endeavor. With former members Tim Rackley, Doug Roark and Daniel Ashmore and the addition of Steve Ladd on tenor, the group is poised to retain and even surpass their previous level of success.

From Tim Rackley
“When extenuating family circumstances warranted our departure from the road last December, we didn’t know exactly what God had planned. After much prayer and with our families faring much better—along with their support—we have made the decision to come back on the road for select dates as a group. We are thankful that God has opened this door for us, and we are honored to be able to minister as The Old Paths once again. We appreciate the continuing support of the Crossroads family and Harper Agency that has helped make this return happen. We feel very blessed to share this new phase of The Old Paths with Steve and are excited to see so many of our friends back on the road.“

From Steve Ladd
"I was excited when approached to be a part of The Old Paths return to Gospel music. I have always loved four-part harmony, and these guys are some of the best! I am so thankful for what God has done in my solo ministry. So, to be able to have a solo career still AND sing with these guys on select dates was a no-brainer for me."

From Ed Harper
“The Old Paths had many fans, churches, and promoters who were disappointed but understanding of their reasons for having to take a break from touring last year. Now being able to record new music and tour select dates will excite their fan base. The Harper Agency is glad that the Lord has allowed this door to reopen for Tim, Doug and all The Old Paths.”

From Chris White
“What a wonderful opportunity it is to re-unite with The Old Paths. Sonlite Records has had a great relationship with them and certainly look forward to continuing our partnership with them. With the addition of one of the industry’s most prolific tenor singers Steve Ladd, we feel the group will be stronger than ever. We can’t wait to get started and be able to service their loyal fan base once again with more great music and performances.”

New music will be available summer 2017 on Sonlite Records.

Top Moment #3 of 2015 - The Old Paths Final Concert

In May, the Old Paths announced that the group would be coming off the road at the end of the year. Their last concert was December 6 in Ramer, Tennessee. And I'm glad to say I got to be there for the last one. I hate to say it was a "top moment" since they are leaving the road, but it was one of the most memorable concerts of the year and one of the most significant since it was their last one.

It was great to see these guys go out while they were still at the top of their game. They decided that their ministry needed to focus to their families which is completely understandable. The guys gave it all they had. Seriously, I've never heard them sound better.

The crowd in Ramer had friends from many different states who traveled to see the quartet for the last time. They all wanted to come honor the guys for their last night singing together.

The concert was full of your favorite Old Paths songs from their very first song they recorded to their latest single and everything in between. The night paid tribute to the group's career and the mark they have made on gospel music. It was a great concert and one that reminded you of why this quartet is so great! Definitely hoping that they make a few appearances every now and then!

Here are several videos of the last concert on the group's Facebook page -

Top Moment #5 of 2015 - Memphis Quartet Show

This summer, I got the chance to attend a few big events. One of them was the Memphis Quartet Show which definitely made the list of my top moments of the year. Even though I only got to be there for one day of the event, it was well worth the trip to Memphis!

I was there for the afternoon matinee to see the 2nd Half Quartet. They had the entire set with just piano and bass singing many classic songs and paying tribute to the Cathedrals.

Read the full recap of the afternoon here.
That night was full of music by many top groups including
  • Tribute Quartet
  • Dixie Echoes
  • The Old Paths
  • Archie Watkins and Smoky Mountain Reunion
  • Primitive Quartet
  • Mark Trammell Quartet
Read all about that night here.

It's hard to pick just one standout moment from the day, so here are a few -

  • "Remind Me of Calvary" - I love hearing Mark Trammell sing this song!
  • "I Want to Know" - In the classiest way, Randy Byrd introduced Pat Barker to join the Mark Tramell Quartet for this song on stage. He let Pat sing one of his signature songs, and it was great hearing Pat on this song again!
  • "I Will Rise" - Tribute Quartet featuring Riley Harrison Clark
  • "I Bowed on my Knees and Cried Holy" - The Old Paths featuring Tim Rackley

Fun Clip Friday - The Old Paths

Last Sunday night was the final concert for The Old Paths Quartet. The group has decided to come off the road and stop touring full-time. The group members have a desire to be at home more for their families, which you definitely have to admire.

I got the chance to be there for their final concert, and let me say I've never heard the guys sound better! They gave it all they had for the last concert. Here are a few videos they shared on their Facebook page for today's Fun Clip Friday!

Farewell to Arkansas - The Old Paths Concert Recap

The Old Paths made their final appearance in Arkansas on Nov. 6. It was a little bittersweet knowing that it's less than a month before the group stops touring full time. However, the guys are giving it their all on this last tour making the most of the dates they have remaining.

The Old Paths - Chuck Pettyjohn, Tim Rackley, Doug Roark
and Daniel Ashmore
There was a sweet spirit in the church that night. Even though it's sad to see them leave the full-time ministry of The Old Paths, you can tell they are following God's leading with their lives. Keep praying for them as they finish up this year and go through this time of transition.

The guys really packed in a great set of songs for the night. It was a good mix of their #1s, new songs and familiar favorites.

Here's a list of what they sang -
  • "Love Them to Jesus" - Great song to start the concert with!
  • "Just Can't Get Over"
  • "Closer to My God"
  • "God's Great" - This is always a favorite and always gets a good response from the audience!
  • "Woke Up This Morning" - Another one of my favorites that they sing. A great uptempo number that has the audience clapping along!
  • "When He Was on the Cross" - Chuck does a great job on this song that's a feature for him.
  • "Ever Since That Wonderful Day"
  • "If That Isn't Love" - This was definitely a highlight of the night for me! Daniel took the first verse and Chuck the second. Beautiful song and beautiful job!
  • "Ordinary People" - Doug gave his testimony before this song. It's so incredible to hear his story of how he came to accept Christ and how God completely changed his life. I love how it sets up this song perfectly! This is becoming my favorite Old Paths song!
  • "God's Gonna Do the Same" - Daniel proves what an incredible bass voice he has on this song!
  • "Midnight Cry" - This might be a song associated with Gold City, but I love hearing Tim sing this song! He nails it every time!
  • "Where Could I Go" - Daniel played this song on his sax during the offering. So great hearing him play!
  • "When the Saints Go Marching In" - Another sax solo from Daniel.
  • "Battlestand" - This was the group's first #1 song, always a great one to hear live!
  • "Until Then" - Love hearing Doug sing this hymn!
  • "I'm Going Where He Lives" - They said this is the first song they sang as a group.
  • "Jesus Is Coming Soon"
  • "I Bowed On My Knees" - Always a highlight, love hearing Tim sing this song. Perfect worshipful ending to the night!

It was an incredible night, such a sweet spirit with appreciation for these guys and their ministry. While it's sad to see them leave the road full-time, they are going out while still on the top!

If they are going to be anywhere close to you in the next few weeks, don't miss your chance to see them!

National Quartet Convention 2015 - Thursday Night Recap

Tonight was by far the best night yet of NQC. There so many memorable moments from tonight, I'm going to try to narrow it the best I can. I was glad that tonight was one of the nights I got to watch all the way through.

The moment of the night definitely belonged to the Perrys. I loved hearing "Sing" from their project that releases tomorrow. Tracy was featured on an old Nelons song "Time Has Made a Change" with special guests Kelly Nelon Clark and Karen Peck Gooch. But they were not the only guests the Perrys had on stage! They started singing "I Wish I Could Have Been There" and Troy announced Loren Harris to come to the stage. He sang part of the first verse, and then passed it off to Joseph Habedank. They were all joined on stage by so many other Perrys alums including Mike Bowling, Nick Trammell, Bryan Walker, Debra Perry and Bryan Elliot had been playing piano for them the entire set. Loved the Perrys reunion that we got to see!!

Several top-notch groups went early in the night and had incredible sets like Tribute Quartet, Karen Peck and New River, the Old Paths and Greater Vision. Tribute started its set with an a cappella medley that was amazing! (Sorry I don't have a more specific name, but this was the first I'd ever heard them do this. If you know it, help me out!) Love hearing Karen sing "Pray Now!" It was a little bittersweet with this being The Old Paths last performance at NQC, but the guys really brought it tonight!

I couldn't believe that this was Gordon Mote's first time on main stage at NQC during an evening concert. He really amazes me to watch him play. Loved hearing him sing "Mercy Walked In." Also he got some help from the Voices of Lee on "Great Is Thy Faithfulness." Actually Voices of Lee made several appearances tonight. They sang with Canton Junction on "Every Hallelujah" and Lillie Knauls on "Oh Happy Day."

I thought Canton Junction had one of the strongest sets of the night. Since they don't really tour full time, it's good to hear them live (or live via webcast) when you get a chance. Also, the Mylon Hayes Family continues to impress me more and more. I like that they sang "Jesus Spoke to Me" and did the shape note singing tonight.

I'm glad the Whisnants sang a little bit of their newest single, "Worry Ends Where Faith Begins." Love that song! Then they ended with "New Day Dawning" turning it around several times and getting Mark and Nick Trammell to join in.

The night ended with a sample of the Brotherhood tour which is Ernie Haase and Signature Sound and the Booth Brothers. They had live music for most if not all of the set featuring Michael of course on drums. Loved hearing the two groups on songs like "Life Is Like a Mountain Railway" and "Home." They closed the night with the Gaither classic "He Touched Me." What a way to end the evening!!

Mark and Nick Trammell were great hosts tonight! I really like the theme that they've had this week (minus last night) of the father and sons. They all have played off each other well!

Highlights -

  • A cappella medley - Tribute Quartet
  • "Pray Now" - Karen Peck and New River
  • "Long Live the King" - The Old Paths
  • "Wish I Coulda Been There" - The Perrys
  • "Jesus Spoke to Me" - Mylon Hayes Family
  • "Jesus Loves You"- Jeff and Sheri Easter
  • "It's Almost Over" - Mark Trammell Quartet
  • "The Cross Is Calling" - The Taylors
  • "Oh Happy Day" - Lillie Knauls
  • "Arise My Love" - Soul'd Out Quartet
  • "New Day Dawning" - The Whisnants
  • "He Touched Me" - Brotherhood (Ernie Haase and Signature Sound and the Booth Brothers)

National Quartet Convention 2015 - Monday Night Recap

I got to watch the webcast in its entirety tonight from the Mylon Hayes Family to the last shout. I have to say overall, I had no issues as in years past. There were a few pauses and hiccups with the webcast during the night, but nothing major at all!

The Mylon Hayes Family got the night started. I was so glad this family got a full set this year! They had a strong set to start the night with two great hymns, "Stepping in the Light" and "What a Day That Will Be."

From the looks of the live streaming, The Old Paths got the first standing ovation of the night with "I Bowed on my Knees." They had a great set! Quartets overall were on fire tonight! It was great hearing the new lineup of Kingdom Heirs with Brian Alvey. Gold City pulled out a couple of older songs including "How Deep Is the Water!" Tribute also had a great set! I'll be honest "Oh What a Savior" is a great song, but seriously overdone in my opinion. That being said, Tribute featured Riley Harrison Clark on the song, and wow! Loved his version! Triumphant was the last quartet to take the stage and had a solid set. Loved hearing Clayton on "Welcome To Heaven."

I think the moment of the night though belonged to Karen Peck and New River. Their set was incredible featuring their new singer Ricky Braddy on an a cappella version of "Were You There." Even though he's sung on large platforms before, major kudos for it being his first time at NQC and singing a song a capella solo. They played an emotional video about Rickey Gooch's battle with cancer and harsh treatment he went through this year. The end of the video talked about Rickey drawing strength from lines of his favorite song. The song was "My God Will Always Be Enough." After the video, Karen sang the song. Beautiful, touching moment!!

The Hoppers had one of the strongest sets of the night, but had a different start with Karlye singing "I Am a Promise." I'm not typically a fan of the novelty kids songs, but I have to say I liked her jazzed up version of the song. It was good hearing the Hopper Brothers again on "Can't Give Up on God." Kim mentioned that this was the fifth anniversary of her brother Tony's passing before she sang "Grace Will Always Be Greater Than Sin." They paid tribute to the Hoppers at the end of the night and ended with "Shoutin' Time." Triumphant and Wilburn and Wilburn joined the Hoppers on stage for the finale.

Highlights of the Night -
  • "The Love of God" - Jim Brady Trio
  • "I Bowed on my Knees and Cried Holy" - The Old Paths
  • "Can't Give Up on God" - Hopper Brothers 2.0
  • "Grace Will Always Be Greater Than Sin" - The Hoppers
  • "My God Will Always Be Enough" - Karen Peck and New River
  • "Jesus Loves You" - Jeff and Sheri Easter
  • "The Old Rugged Cross Made the Difference" - Wilburn and Wilburn
  • "Welcome to Heaven" - Triumphant Quartet
  • "Oh What a Savior" - Tribute Quartet
  • "Shoutin' Time" - Hoppers (with friends Triumphant and Wilburn and Wilburn)

Silver Dollar City Southern Gospel Picnic - Aug. 28, 2015

Yesterday morning I headed north to Branson, Missouri for Silver Dollar City's Southern Gospel Picnic. It was the second day of the festival, but my first day to attend.

The lineup for the day included 2nd Generation, the Ball Brothers, the Perrys, Mark Bishop and The Old Paths. It's really almost impossible to see everyone while you're here. And there are some groups you want to see more than once. The park does a great job of scheduling so many different shows each day.

I'm just going to hit the highlights from each group I got to see today -

2nd Generation

  • "What a Day That Will Be"  - Loved hearing Brenda sing this song! Such a sweet moment where they had the audience join in too!
  • "Sheltered in the Arms of God" - Elaine sang this one. Beautiful song!!
  • "Soul Searching" - Good hearing this one from their newest project!!

Ball Brothers

  • "I Shall Know Him" - They started the set with this one a cappella. Amazing!!
  • "Wedding Music" - Jon Epley went to the keyboard for this one. Good hearing them sing this Cathedral classic.
  • "Just As I Am" - Probably my favorite Ball Brothers song!!

The Perrys

  • "I Can Trust Him" - Great getting to see Libbi sing this song live!
  • "He Will Hide Me" - Always a favorite!
  • "If You Knew Him"
  • "Damascus Road"
  • They sang a couple of the older Happy Goodman songs. I like hearing them do some of these older songs.
  • Troy talked about all they had been through in the past couple of years. He also gave part of his testimony and set up "Calvary Conquers It All." Great hearing them stage this one again!!

Mark Bishop

  • "Pray on the Little Days" - Love the message of this song!!
  • "My Name Is Jesus" - I'm used to the version where he has guest singers but it's fun hearing him sing all the different roles.

The Old Paths

  • "I Bowed on my Knees" - I know Michael English is known for this song but Tim's version is right there with his! Amazing!!
  • Daniel Ashmore, bass singer, was featured a lot tonight! It's hard to pick one highlight from what he sang. And as impressive as his bass singing is, his saxophone playing is equally as impressive!!
  • "Until Then" - Doug sang this and then had the audience join in on the chorus. Such a sweet worshipful moment.
  • "If That Isn't Love" - It was good to hear them sing this featuring both Daniel and Chuck Pettyjohn.
  • "Love Them to Jesus"
  • Doug gave his testimony to set up "Ordinary People." Love hearing him tell his story of how God moved. He also talked about how they are coming off the road and this being their farewell tour.

Thursday Night - Memphis Quartet Show - Concert Recap

Thursday was a full day of gospel music. The concert that night kicked off at 6 p.m. and ended
several hours later. I confess I slipped out just a little early because I had to be back at work the next morning! Each of the six groups sang about 30 minutes during the first half and then came back out for about 15 minutes each in the second half.

The six groups that sang that night were

  • Tribute Quartet
  • Dixie Echoes
  • The Old Paths
  • Archie Watkins and Smoky Mountain Reunion
  • Primitive Quartet
  • Mark Trammell Quartet
Of the six groups, I hadn't seen two of them live before, Smoky Mountain Reunion and the Primitive Quartet. It was a good lineup of some great quartet singing! Here are some of my thoughts on the night and standout moments -

Tribute Quartet
  • This group was the perfect choice to get the night started! They had a great energy to get the crowd going!
  • "I Will Rise" - I just love this song every time! Such a powerful song!!
  • "Good News from Jerusalem" - Always a crowd favorite, and great way to end their set!
Dixie Echoes
  • This was my first chance to hear Chandler Johnson on bass and WOW! This young man can hold his own at the bass part with the seasoned veterans of the group. He is incredible!
  • "Crumbs From the Table" - I always enjoy hearing Scoot sing this song.
Smoky Mountain Reunion
  • "God Is Still On the Throne" - Their a cappella version of this song was a definite highlight!
  • It was good to hear them sing some of the classics like "Jesus Is Coming Soon" and "Unseen Hand."
The Old Paths
  • The response for The Old Paths was awesome! The crowd really loved this group and wanted to show them the love since it would be their last time at the Memphis Quartet Show. They also got the first standing ovation of the night.
  • "I Bowed on my Knees" - I'm so glad that I got to hear Tim sing this song! He does a fantastic job on this song!
  • It was neat to hear the audience's response as songs started for some of their hits like "Love Them To Jesus" and "God's Great." They really made their last appearance a memorable one!
Primitive Quartet
  • "My Hope Is in the Blood" - They sang this in tribute to Norman Wilson. It was a touching moment and a great way to honor him!
  • "He Looked Beyond My Fault" - They did this as an instrumental. It was definitely a standout moment of their set!
Mark Trammell Quartet
  • "God's Been Faithful" - This has become one of my top favorite songs that they sing! Great message, and love to hear them sing it!
  • "Your Walk Talks" - The audience loves this song. Always gets a great response!
  • "I Want to Know" - In one of the classiest moves I've seen, they pulled Pat Barker on stage to sing this with them. Someone requested this song during the matinee, but they didn't have the track. Randy Byrd said that he is one of Pat's biggest fans, and it was only fitting that Pat come up and sing his signature song. It was great hearing Pat sing this song again, and I was so impressed with the way they handled it!

I hate that I was only there for one day, but glad that I got to make the quick trip. I think this event is really becoming a favorite of gospel fans. Hopefully next year I can see more of it!

New Directions for Old Paths - News

Some blog posts are just painful to write and post. This is one of those. The Old Paths have decided that it's time to transition their ministry and come off the road. The full release is below.

On a personal level, it's been a pleasure to get to know these guys and their hearts. I know this was not a decision they made lightly. While I hate to see this come to an end, I know that they have sought God and His will in this. These guys are absolutely what you see is what you get, some of the most genuine men in Southern Gospel. You have to admire them when they realize that it's time for their ministry to change from a group to personal ministries in their individual lives putting their families more at the forefront. They will definitely be missed!!

Here's the full press release -

Douglasville, GA - For more than twelve years, The Old Paths have traveled not only across the
United States, but also the world. It has been their privilege to share the good news of Jesus through Southern Gospel music.

While the blessings that the quartet has received have been numerous, this group has faced many challenges in the last year—primarily family obligations and health issues. Many are aware of the sudden, life-threatening condition that was discovered with Tim Rackley's daughter which required an immediate kidney transplant.

Group owners Tim Rackley and Douglas Roark have decided that it is in the best interest of their families for their focus to be on home. With this decision, The Old Paths' final service will be December 6, 2015. They will be honoring all dates currently on their calendar as well as any additional dates added before December 6. Both Tim and Douglas feel it is important to honor obligations to those who have invested in The Old Paths. They also want the other members of the group to have more-than-ample time to make future plans.

Tim stated, "Those that truly know us know our hearts. When we started The Old Paths, we never dreamed that our desire to simply sing in small churches would evolve in to what our ministry has become. We sincerely hope that we have blessed others as much as we have been blessed. We will miss traveling and singing but we feel like it is time for our families to take priority."

"Decisions like these are probably the hardest for a group owner(s), and it is not a decision to taken lightly," says Douglas, "but once we stepped back and looked at the big picture, the decision was obvious."

"It’s been an honor and certainly a privilege to have worked with The Old Paths over the past few years. They are not only men of incredible talent, but incredible integrity as well. In discussing this with them in depth, I could hear and feel the difficulty of this decision from the depths of their hearts. Though difficult, I believe they are doing what they truly believe is right for their families. I have truly enjoyed working with Doug and Tim throughout our journey. My prayers will be with them as they go to the next chapter in their lives!" — Chris White, Crossroads Music

“All of us at the Harper Agency realize the difficultly for Doug and Tim in making a decision such as this. However, we respect the fact that their families are a priority at this time. We have been honored to play a role in the growth of their music ministry the last two years and are fully committed to fulfilling our commitment to their scheduling thru December 6, 2015." — Ed Harper, The Harper Agency

The Old Paths will always cherish the friendships and memories made throughout their travels and hope that in some way they played a part in furthering the kingdom of Christ. The Old Paths, through all they have experienced, both good or bad, could always refer to this scripture: In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. [1 Thessalonians 5:18]
