Praisefest Branson 2017 - Recap - Part 2

Friday morning at Praisefest Branson they teased that there would be a surprise that night. You could hear a few guesses and suspicions of what that might be. The groups scheduled to be there that night were Legacy Five, Cana's Voice, Ernie Haase and Signature Sound and the Mark Trammell Quartet.

Here are a few highlights of the first half of the night -

• "One Holy Lamb" (Legacy Five) - Tenor Josh Feemster was featured on this song. 
• "Hands of a Carpenter" (Legacy Five) - Scott Fowler told a little bit about the background of this song. It was a last minute edition to their latest album. Trey Ivey arranges all their music and Scott sent him the song the night before to arrange. Scott later told him the final piece of including this song on the project would be for Trey to sing it. So Trey stepped out from behind the piano for this one. 

• "Oh for a Thousand Tongues" (Cana's Voice) - They said this was the first song they ever sang together at Wayne Haun's house when they were talking about forming the group. Loved hearing them sing this with just the piano.
• "Jesus Never Fails" (Cana's Voice) - This is one of my favorite songs released in the last year. Love hearing it live!
• "Blessed Assurance" (Ernie Haase and Signature Sound) - I love the group's unique take on this classic hymn. 
• "Get Away Jordan" (Ernie Haase and Signature Sound) - This is always such a fun, uptempo song, and it definitely got the entire audience on its feet clapping along. However, Ernie took it down a notch and took a break between the song to talk about the lyrics of the last verse and what it meant to him especially after George Younce passed. I think it's easy for us to get caught up in the fast songs and sometimes lose the meaning, so I loved that he did this!
• "The King Is Coming" (Mark Trammell Quartet) - Love hearing Mark sing this song! It was their last song of the night.

The Mark Trammell Quartet sang a few songs actually to start the second half. Then, Landon Beene,president of IMC Concerts, came out and said when you had Gerald Wolfe, Ernie Haase, Scott Fowler and Mark Trammell all together, there needed to be a little bit of a Cathedral Reunion segment. Pat Barker was brought on stage to join them for the bass part. Here are some of my favorites that they sang -

• "Echoes From the Burning Bush"
• "Master Builder"
• "Boundless Love"
• "There Is a Fountain" (a cappella)
• "We Shall See Jesus" - This was the last song of the night and was probably the moment of the night!

The tease to a surprise was better than expected! So glad we got this mini Cathedral Family Reunion!

Saturday morning was the last session of the weekend. It was a little sad for it all to come to an end. In addition to great music, we also got to hear great preaching from Phil Hoskins. This was my first time to hear him speak in person. I'm thankful that IMC Concerts included Biblical teaching and preaching during the weekend. 

Saturday morning had music from the Erwins, Cana's Voice and Legacy Five. This was my first time to hear the Erwins in person. Jody McBrayer led the congregation in worship to start the final session of the day with "Oh How I Love Jesus" and "In the Garden." 

Here are a few highlights from the morning - 

• "Greater" (Erwins) - I'm really glad they included this one in their set. It's one of my favorites they sing. 
• "Clouds" (Erwins) - They talked about how the song came from a verse in Nahum. It's such a great song about how great God is if the clouds are the dust at His feet. Keith does a great job on this song. 
• "Big Enough" (Cana's Voice) - Loved hearing this one live. TaRanda also took time to explain where the name of Cana's Voice came from. Jesus used the broken and dirty ceremonial pots to perform his first miracle. She talked about the repurposing of those pots for a new purpose. God had a special plan and way to use them, they felt the same way with their ministry and where they were in their lives. 
• "Great Medley" (Legacy Five) - Love hearing all these old songs together. Their arrangement of these songs is one of my favorite songs from that project. 
• "Christ Is Still the King" (Legacy Five) - Such a great song to end the weekend on!

#2 Top Moment of 2015 - Cathedral Family Reunion

I'm winding down the countdown with #2 today. This list would not be complete without the Cathedrals Family Reunion event I got to attend in October.

It's hard to pinpoint a "moment" from the weekend.  You can read the full recap here. My favorite session was definitely Saturday morning. The five guys - Gerald Wolfe, Mark Trammell, Ernie Haase, Danny Funderburk and Scott Fowler - told stories from their days with the Cathedrals. They gathered around the piano with Pat Barker on bass and sang many favorites and even a few requests, including "The Laughing Song," which was definitely a moment! :) I'm sure every Saturday morning session is different!

However, the moment of the weekend had to be the guys from all the groups there singing "We Shall See Jesus." Absolutely incredible!

Roger Bennett - Cathedrals - Fun Clip Friday

Last weekend I went to the Roger Bennett Memorial Sing in Cave City, Arkansas. The night featured the Mark Trammell Quartet and the Talleys, but the purpose was to honor the memory of Roger Bennett. It was a great night, full recap coming next week!

But for today's Fun Clip Friday, I decided to pull a clip of Roger from the Cathedral days. This features him singing the song, "Homeland." Enjoy!

Cathedrals Family Reunion - Branson, MO - 2015

The Cathedrals Family Reunion event was exactly as advertised - a family reunion. I had the chance to attend one of the events in Branson, Missouri. The event includes Cathedrals alumni Mark Trammell, Gerald Wolfe, Scott Fowler, Danny Funderburk and Ernie Haase and their groups. The event also includes Pat Barker (formerly of Mark Trammell Quartet) on bass for most of the classic Cathedrals sets.

It was clear that this really was a family affair. These guys share a special bond, all having been a part of the Cathedrals. They picked on each other like family. They had no real set list, but listened to requests from the audience and from other members as to what to sing next. I'm sure each Cathedrals Family Reunion is a little different!

Since I didn't discover Southern Gospel and the Cathedrals until my teen years, I never got the chance to see them live in person. But I feel like this was the next best thing! It was clear that these men had the utmost respect for George Younce and Glen Payne. They recognized the impact on their lives and their careers. The weekend was really a tribute to them and their legacy in gospel music.

I'll be honest this is one of those events that I didn't bother taking detailed notes during for the blog. I just wanted to enjoy it. So you're just getting the high points of the weekend, but there are definitely plenty of those!

Friday night's session started with the five guys and all their groups on stage. They sang a couple and then each group had its own set. Since Dustin Doyle and his wife just had a new baby, Wayne Haun filled in at baritone Friday night for Ernie Haase and Signature Sound.

For the classic Cathedrals' part of the night, Scott, Ernie, Danny, Gerald, Mark and Pat gathered around the piano. No tracks, just Gerald on piano and Mark playing the bass guitar. I loved that they had a semi-plan, but really felt the crowd and weren't afraid to just call out songs. It was fun seeing all five guys interact and sing together. They sound incredible together!! It's good to see Pat Barker still a part of these events. People commented all weekend long how much he sounded like George!

Here are highlights I remember -

• "Boundless Love"
• "Champion of Love" - This was the grand finale with all the guys Friday night. Scott and Gerald split the verses. 
• "Step Into the Water" - They almost sang this one twice! They started another song ("Boundless Love," I think) and Scott Fowler started singing the lyrics for "Step Into the Water." It definitely became the joke all weekend! Anytime they weren't sure what to sing next, Scott or one of the other guys would say, "Step Into the Water."
• "Bloodwashed Band"
• "Wedding Music"

I'm really not sure how to describe Saturday morning other than fun. Landon Beene of IMC Concerts said before it started that this was his favorite session of these events, and I can see why! I'm sure you never know exactly what will happen! 

They sang around the piano for about 30 minutes (the five guys and Pat on bass) and then told Cathedrals days stories. They let the audience request a few. So Pat had to sing "The Laughing Song." Someone also requested "Crimson River," which I was not familiar with. They all made it clear this was not one they had rehearsed, but still made it through a verse and chorus of the song! It was amazing to me how they remembered everything as they did especially with Gerald and Mark playing instruments. Once Gerald knew the key, he just took off. You forget what a great piano player he is sometimes, but I so impressed!

As I mentioned I wasn't well acquainted with the Cathedrals, but it was funny hearing several stories from the guys. I didn't know that Ernie Haase and Scott Fowler went to college together. And apparently Mark Trammell liked putting new members through an initiation process. Mark also told several stories of living on the same street as George and Roger Bennett. Ernie also told what it was like to go to George asking permission to marry his daughter. It was a great time with lots of laughs! They even let some audience members ask questions toward the end. 

It became a joke that weekend that Gerald Wolfe could tell exactly what day something happened. He knew date and day of the week for specific concerts and recordings. It really was amazing! The other guys were also taken a back by how good his memory was. Scott Fowler asked him what day he bought his first house, and he was stumped! Haha! So randomly the rest of the time, they would ask "When did you buy your first house?"

After the morning session, they had some memorabilia set up for us to look at and the last bus that the Cathedrals toured in that you could walk through.

Saturday night was similar to Friday night in that each group had its own set and then they had a "Cathedrals set." Danny Funderburk sang in the middle several songs solo between the four quartets. This was my first time hearing him live, but he's still got a great, strong tenor voice! 

Wayne Haun had to fly back to Nashville to prepare for the Dove Awards Saturday night, so Ernie had Scott Fowler fill in at baritone! It was fun watching Scott try to keep up with Signature Sound's choreography on "Glory to God in the Highest." He said after it was over that he got to fulfill two dreams that night, singing with Signature Sound and being on "Dancing With the Stars."

Here are highlights from Saturday - 

• "This Old House" - For the most part, Pat pulled bass duty. They started the last half of the concert with this song with Paul Harkey, Matthew Fouch and Pat each taking a verse and trading off. 
• "Yesterday" - This was just the five guys paying tribute to George. 
• "Can He Could He Would He"
• "Standing on Holy Ground"
• "Sin Will Take You Farther" - Love hearing Mark on this song!
• "Heavenly Parade" - Gerald said that he wanted to sing the bass part of this song. Pat tried to teach him how to "sell" the bass part. Hilarious!
• "I Thirst"
• "Search Me O God" - They started this with a clip of George and Glen. Then, the entire group of men from all the groups started singing. Incredible moment!
• "Climbing Higher and Higher"
• "We Shall See Jesus" - Probably the moment of the weekend!

This was such a great weekend of gospel music from the first note on Friday night to the very end on Saturday. I definitely recommend going if you get a chance. There are only a handful of these events left this year. I'm sure each event is a little different with the way things moved. The guys do a great job of reading the crowd and are willing to take requests from the audience! You won't regret attending one if you get a chance!

One last note - Roll Tide! I'm a huge Arkansas Razorback fan, but as promised, I said I'd give the Crimson Tide a shout out for beating the Hogs on Saturday, so there it is! 

Fun Clip Friday - Cathedrals Family Reunion

This morning I am on my way to Branson for the Cathedrals Family Reunion. This is an event I've been looking forward to for a long time. The small taste I've seen from YouTube clips and the NQC finale last week made me even more anxious!

The Cathedrals Family Reunion events consist of Greater Vision, Mark Trammell Quartet, Legacy Five, Ernie Haase and Signature Sound and Danny Funderburk. For today's Fun Clip Friday, it only makes sense to share a clip from the first Cathedrals Family Reunion they did! Enjoy!

National Quartet Convention 2015 - Tuesday night recap

I tuned in tonight just in time to catch the end of the Lesters' set. I'm sure I missed some highlights and I know I missed several good groups early in the night! But here is what stood out to me from what I saw:

The Collingsworth Family absolutely nailed it tonight! Definitely one of the strongest sets I saw. I loved getting to hear so many of their new songs, "That Day is Coming," "Gotta Get to Jesus" and "You're About to Climb."

The night ended with the Cathedral Family Reunion set with Gerald Wolfe, Scott Howard, Mark Trammell, Ernie Haase, Danny Funderburk and Pat Barker. They used photos and clips of George and Glen in tribute to them. They gathered around the piano for "Jesus We Just Want to Thank You." It was a beautiful moment, but I loved them ending the night on "We Shall See Jesus."

I tuned in just in time to catch Jonathan Lester recognizing his dad for his years of service to the group. The Lesters have carried on the tradition of singing gospel music longer than any other group on the road today and a great deal of that credit goes to Brian Lester. He was featured on "He Didn't Throw the Clay Away," great moment!

The Taylors and the Talleys both had solid sets! I loved hearing Suzanne Taylor Hise on "I Tremble," always been a big fan of that song! The Talleys sang a new song "People in the Line." Lauren does an outstanding job on it and such convicting lyrics! We never know what the people around us are going through. 

It was neat seeing Mark Bishop share the stage with his daughters tonight. They are a great young talent. He also had a full band on stage with him. 

Greater Vision also had a solid set. It was good hearing Chris featured on "Hallelujah Square!" I also love the song "As We Speak" from their new project that Gerald sings. 

Of the quartets I saw, I really enjoyed the Inspirations' set. I haven't heard this group in a while (I missed them in Branson a few weeks ago.), and they pulled out several old familiar favorites. They sang a version of "Beulah Land" that was incredible!!

Remind Me of Calvary - When Lyrics Speak

I'm normally a planner, but sometimes life opens doors that you need to walk through. A few weeks ago at the last minute, things worked out for me to go to Memphis for a day during the Memphis Quartet Show. It was such a great day, and I'm so glad it worked out. During the matinee, the Second Half Quartet sang several older, Cathedral songs. I'll be honest since I didn't really "grow up" on this music, some Cathedral songs I'm just not familiar with. (Yes, I realize that makes me a bad gospel music fan and a bad blogger, I'm trying to remedy that.) As soon as Mark Trammell started singing “When my heart is filled with pain, and I’m tempted to complain,” I knew this was going to be a message I needed to hear.

This past month has been difficult. My grandfather has been really struggling health wise and just a lot of uncertainties in our family. Questions with no answers. Playing the waiting game. None of these are fun. So an afternoon and night at the Memphis Quartet Show was a good break from everything. What I wanted was a break, a chance to get away and escape, but I hadn’t bargained on how much I would be ministered to and how much I would be reminded of how God is in control of all, no matter how things may seem.

The song "Remind Me of Calvary" was the perfect assurance I needed that afternoon. And it's a message I constantly need to hear. We all need to be reminded of Calvary, to be drawn to the cross. It’s so easy to lose sight of Christ, His goodness and mercy when everything around us can be so uncertain. Like I said, I’m a planner. I’m not a fan of the unknown. Thankfully, I was reminded of the cross. When life is unsteady, Jesus is faithful. He’s always there. We can trust Him, not because of what He’s done for us in the past or what He might do for us through these circumstances but because He’s God. He paid the price at Calvary because of His great love for us. We all need to just be reminded of Calvary and God’s faithfulness in the midst of uncertainty.

2014 Dove Award Winners

The Dove Awards were held last night in Nashville. The event will not be televised until Sunday night on TBN (check your local listings), but the winners have been announced. Here's a look at all the Southern Gospel winners -

Cathedral Family Reunion Returns

The Cathedrals Family Reunion is returning! And it's on a much larger scale with a tour continuing through next year. All the artists and groups involved had been teasing to a big announcement to be made this morning, and it did not disappoint!


Here's the full release -

April 22, 2013 (Nashville, TN) – Today IMC Management, in association with Showcase Media, announced plans for the Cathedrals Family Reunion Tour in select cities. Due to the overwhelming response to the original event held in Dallas, TX in November 2013, organizers have planned for six special weekends during 2014 and 2015 that will place the event within 500 miles of most of the population of the United States.

It all kicks off where it all began, in Akron, Ohio - the birthplace of the Cathedral Quartet. The Akron Civic Center will welcome Cathedral aficionados November 7-8, 2014 as Danny Funderburk, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Greater Vision, Legacy Five, and the Mark Trammell Quartet, once again, join together to honor the legacy of the Cathedral Quartet.

Today Scott Fowler, Danny Funderburk, Ernie Haase, Mark Trammell and Gerald Wolfe made the special announcement in a video from the Younce family home in Akron.

As with the original event, each weekend will focus on celebrating the legacy of the iconic Cathedral Quartet, featuring music from each of the current artists as well as the very special Cathedrals Family Reunion quartet. The weekend event will also feature memorabilia displays, special matinees, a behind the scenes Q&A, a chance to tour "Silhouette," the last tour bus the Cathedrals used and much more!

"We planned the original Cathedrals Family Reunion as a one-time weekend event," said Landon Beene, IMC Management. "Immediately after the event and consistently, the IMC Concerts office and the artists were flooded with requests to "do it again" or "take it on tour." Today, we are excited to announce that we have heard your voice and we are taking the Cathedrals Family Reunion on the road!"

Each tour city has been strategically planned to be within a 500-mile radius of most of the United States of America so that as many people as possible can experience this wonderful weekend of music and memories.

In addition to the tour, a preview of the Cathedrals Family Reunion event will take place during a special matinee performance at the 2014 NQC in Pigeon Forge, TN this September.

Fun Clip Friday - Greater Vision and Mark Trammell Quartet

I know this clip has been making the rounds lately, but I feel it's too good not to feature as a Fun Clip Friday. I'm a firm believer that sometimes the best moments in concerts are the spontaneous ones. And this is a great example!

The clip is from a concert last Friday night with Greater Vision and the Mark Trammell Quartet in Marion, Ill. Danny Jones of the Singing News caught the moment on video. Gerald Wolfe, Chris Allman, Mark Trammell, Rodney Griffin and Pat Barker sang a few together and took some audience requests. And then one man was insistent they sing one they had never sung together before. Below is what happened -

NQC Night 2 Highlights and Recap

Whatever problems that plagued the webcast on night one, thankfully were not as present for night two.   There was only one moment that will be addressed later where it seemed everyone was having problems.

Tonight overall to me was stronger than last night. Most of the groups seemed to have solid sets. But here are the standout points for me - 

• It was incredible to see the support behind Libbi Perry Stuffle for being there. I loved the Perrys' set tonight. "When He Spoke" was one of the songs of the night in my book! I also thought it was neat how they showed the video of Tracy singing "Plan of Salvation" from NQC 2011 (I believe) with them singing with him live. Although, I do have to say it was funny on the webcast to see the group as it was then with Joseph and hear David on lead.
• The only point where the webcast really gave me issues was probably the must-see moment of the night - The Cathedrals Reunion song. I caught only bits and pieces, but enough to know that it was a highlight even with a few missing words! :)
• Jason Crabb continues to show how incredible he is as a solo artist. He did get some help though tonight from his daughter Ashleigh. She really has a great voice for her age, and despite some nerves had a great performance! Jason closed his set with "That's What the Blood Is For," love that song and another highlight of the night!
• I liked seeing Jason reprise his role on "Searchin'" with the Talleys. I'm not sure if it was planned or not, but I was definitely in favor of it!
• I always find it interesting to see what musicians are playing for what groups during NQC. You never know what artist might be there to pitch in! It seemed that Jeff and Sheri Easter and the Whisnants made an even trade tonight. Ethan Whisnant played for Jeff and Sheri, and Jeff and Sheri's drummer, Landan, played for the Whisnants.
• Speaking of Jeff and Sheri, I really liked them hosting tonight. Jeff Easter trying to fill time at the end got pretty comical! They also had a strong set as performers. 
• They definitely saved some of the strongest sets for the end with the run of the Perrys, Talleys, Whisnants and Brian Free and Assurance. It was good to hear a new song by the Whisnants, "Move That Stone," from their new album which I'm looking forward to getting. Brian Free and Assurance seemed to get the audience into "Long as I Got King Jesus" even given the late hour.
• Karen Peck and New River also debuted songs from their new album. I thought they had a strong set closing with the forever favorite "Four Days Late, " but being so early in the night it's sometimes easy to forget a group that was five hours ago. 
• This was my first chance to see Gold City with Robert Fulton on tenor. And I didn't get a chance to catch their full set, but enough to know that I really like what he brings to the group. Loved hearing him on "Calvary Conquers It All!"

Cathedrals Family Reunion Event Announced

Buzz had been circulating for a while on a big announcement coming soon. It was postponed a day due to the bombing in Boston. So was the big news worth the wait?

Fans are going to get a glimpse of the Cathedrals again through a Cathedrals Family Reunion Event.

April 16, 2013 (Nashville, TN) – IMC Management in association with Showcase Management announced today plans for the Cathedrals Family Reunion event to be held November 8-9, 2013 in Fort Worth, TX at the MacGorman Performing Arts Center. For the first time ever, the event will feature Scott Fowler, Danny Funderburk, Ernie Haase, Mark Trammell and Gerald Wolfe together on one stage singing the classic songs of The Cathedrals. In addition, the weekend will feature appearances by Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Legacy Five, Greater Vision, Mark Trammell Quartet and Danny Funderburk.

In a video press conference, Landon Beene, IMC Management President, made the announcement along with Scott Fowler, Danny Funderburk, Ernie Haase, Mark Trammell and Gerald Wolfe. Les Butler (Singing News/Solid Gospel) began the press conference, introduced Beene, and then each individual was asked to share their favorite memory from their time with the legendary quartet.

Celebrating the legacy of the iconic Cathedral Quartet, the event will feature music from each of the current artists as well as special once-in-a-lifetime “reunion moments” during every unique session of the event. Several surprises and activities are scheduled including an exhibit of Cathedrals’ memorabilia and a very special chance to see and tour “Silhouette,” the last touring bus George Younce, Glen Payne, Roger Bennett and all The Cathedrals traveled millions of miles in. A Q&A session with The Cathedrals alumni will be a special highlight of the event and is sure to delight fans with a "behind-the-scenes" look into the world of The Cathedrals.

“It has been a personal dream of mine, and countless Cathedral aficionado’s, to see all of these men come together again,” said Landon Beene. “Since the farewell concert in 1999, they have not shared the stage together. Now, this dream will become a reality. You don't want to miss this!”
